Although advertisers of cholesterol lowering medications understandably spend a great deal of their money and our time to convince us that cholesterol is a bad thing, cholesterol does exist in our bodies for a reason.

Cholesterol is carried throughout the body by the blood stream and its main function is to assist in building and maintaining membranes throughout the body. It helps keep these membranes flexible and supple over a wide temperature range. A brand new study has been released on an experimental drug that is showing a lot of promise both in boosting levels of HDL cholesterol and lowering LDL cholesterol.

In thi study, the new drug, called Anacetrapib, increased HDL by 138% over a placebo and reduced LDL by 40%. This was an eighteen month study of 1,600 heart patients who were currently taking statin drugs.  As important, the study’s findings did not seem to increase the risk of heart attacks or increase death rates from heart disease. Even a quick, cursory search online for “detox cleanse” will return well over a million results. All these different sites are in addition to the dozens of books in print promoting one type of detox diet or another.

In the non-virtual world health spas often ask, and get, hundreds or thousands of dollars to help their clients “detox” themselves in elegant surroundings.

So, obviously, there is a great interest in the subject even though many medical practitioners and nutritional experts are firm in their belief that detox diets are potentially very dangerous and have no basis in scientific fact.
